Snow Troll by VincentVanHoof Snow Troll by VincentVanHoof

Snow Troll

Long lost distant relatives of Giants, the Snow Troll is monstrous in scale.

Towering over any human, these solitary beasts live high on the tops of ice covered mountains.

They are very territorial and rarely roam outside of their home.

Firstly, I think that you did a really nice job with the composition. The dark silhouette of the... I will call him adventurer... on the bottom, rising up to a sheer white, snowy sky, really gives the image as a whole a lot of nice visual beauty. I like that in the foreground, although it looks like they are simple brush strokes, the ground looks very detailed. I can image the mud caused by the wetness of the snow and the texture of stone. The snow troll's head and neck are very nicely done. There is a lot of added detail to make him stand out. I understand the blurred effect of the pelvic area and the legs since they are further back and more in the snow, but I feel like you could have gotten away with adding sharper contrast and more detail in the chest area and the arm that is closer to the viewer. I feel like a lot of the time with digital paintings, it is easy for soft brush strokes to take over and it depletes the piece of details that it really should have. Overall, I think this is really nice. I'm assuming the snow troll is your own design, because I haven't seen one like it before, and I really like your execution for the most part

All of Mr. Van Hoof's works are exemplary. The play of chiaroscuro and feeling gigantism in the works are what please me the most. In art lighting is the hardest thing to capture. Lighting that captures a mood, whether it be romantic or in this case horrific, is one of the most important aspect of the visual art of illustration. His composition is always dynamic and evocative of a world that is like our own and yet also unearthly and fantastic at the same time. This particular piece with its use of both back and front lighting shining off a misty rain which evokes feeling of coldness, loneliness and desolation of spirit would have thrilled Clark Ashton Smith or H. P. Lovecraft. The feeling too of realism, one almost can smell the stink of this creature's wet fur and hear its rumbling growls, is apropos to the subject matter. Yet in the final analysis the creature's form and visage is entirely original to the mind of the artist and not derivative of any other creatures of myth.

Scary... I hope that guy have some tricks to deal with great force and violent temper (asuming the troll is a bad one).

the composition of this piece is beautifully done! I love the multiple shades of black and grey you used to convey the darkness! I also love how you show the height of this monster in comparison of the man! Awesome job!

The environment is fantastic for setting the mood. I really like the rain direction as well as how it's more and less visible in different areas of the canvas.

Very cool! Great picture overall - the troll, the little person in the corner, the glow from the flame, the rain pouring down... Awesome job! I like how the light from the flame is reflected on the troll's body, as well.

Very dynamic, looks good in a thumbnail view too... which makes the piece very powerful. Great use of colors!
